Fresh, Friendly, and Always Open

I’ll be honest — we weren’t overly excited about dining here at first. Compared to the historic charm of Thru the Gate Café just across the road, Rustic Edge didn’t have quite the same external appeal.

We actually came here out of necessity. After travelling all morning, it was 3:00pm, most places were closed (including the Courthouse Hotel, which we had also tried), and we needed something to eat.

This is a classic case of, never judge a book by its cover. Not only were we not disappointed, we left so happy and grateful for the experience that I felt glad the other locations were closed.

Walking into Rustic Edge Café & Takeaway was an instant relief on a scorching hot day. It was cool and full of character with bright and vibrant furnishings, giving off a playful American diner vibe. The food didn’t disappoint either: fresh, affordable, and served in generous portions that left us satisfied and smiling.

Katie, the owner, adds the real charm. We’ve had a few lovely chats while waiting for our meals, and it’s clear she’s genuinely kind and passionate about her café. Her warmth makes the experience feel personal,  like you’re more than just a customer, you’re part of the community, which was especially nice to feel as out-of-towners.

The best part? They’re open all day. When everything else is shut, Rustic Edge is there. This has been a huge relief for us, especially since we’re still adjusting to daylight savings and often end up hunting for lunch at 2 or 3pm when most kitchens in regional Victoria are closed!

We have since been back several times and the food, service, atmosphere have not disappointed us once. In fact, the last time I enjoyed a meal I sat down on one of the diner chairs for the first time expecting a hard surface, only to be happily surprised when I sank into a plush cushion. Talk about relaxing!

Our final takeaway? Rustic Edge Café is well above average. Talk to anyone staying at Smythesdale Gardens, and they’ll tell you the same thing — it is just that good.
